Kombidek system

The Kombidek system is a floor heating/cooling system for broiler barns in which heat exchangers in the floor are used to absorb and disperse heat or cold. The system facilitates climate control and ensures optimal conditions inside the barn, improving the welfare of the chickens. It also cools the manure and reduces odour and ammonia emissions. Because the heat and cold are reused, the Kombidek system saves a great deal of energy.

How the Kombidek system works

The principle of the Kombidek system is that from day 1 stored heat, that was generated by the heavier broilers from the previous round, is reused for the broiler chicks. This results in an effective reuse of energy, while the manure and heavy broilers are kept cool. Cooling the broilers, especially in the summer period, reduces heat stress in the animals. The cooling of the manure results in significantly lower emissions. Therefore, the system has been awarded a Green Label (Groenlabel).


Temperature during fattening/finishing

The initial temperature of the floor heating in the broiler barn is set to 30°C – 33°C for broiler chicks. The temperature is then automatically lowered by 0.333°C each day until it reaches the preferred temperature for older broilers (approximately 27°C).

PHASE 1: The floor temperature drops from 30°C (day 1) to 27°C (day 23). The floor temperature is equal to the litter temperature.

PHASE 2: Transition from heating the floor to cooling the floor. Up to day 30, the minimum temperature is 27°C, and the floor temperature is equal to the litter temperature.

PHASE 3: Fattening/finishing of the broilers. During this phase, the floor is cooled. The temperature of the floor is between 25°C and 27°C; the temperature of the sawdust is approximately 3°C higher.
