Heat and Cold Storage is a sustainable method of storing energy in the form of heat or cold in the ground. The technique is used to heat and cool buildings, houses, greenhouses and processes. This method leads to significant energy savings and reduces CO2 emissions.
R&R Systems supplies two types of heat and cold storage systems: open source systems and closed source systems.
In an open source system, cold groundwater is extracted from the ground, warmed up, and pumped back into the ground (for heating, the process is the other way around). Open source systems are subject to a permit obligation if you wish to transfer more than 10m3/h; this is in accordance with the Dutch Water Act. This permit must be applied for via the province (the Provincial Executive).
In a closed source system, a liquid (a mixture of water and glycol) passes through the R&R Systems heat exchangers in the ground. The liquid does not come into direct contact with the groundwater. There is no active movement of groundwater by the system. Closed source systems <70 kW should be reported. For closed source systems >70 kW a permit is required. This is a simple permit that can easily be obtained via the municipality.
R&R Systems offers the following versions/designs of closed source systems:
Vertical Heat Exchanger System:
The vertical ground heat exchanger system consists of one or more ground collectors. A drill carriage drills "holes" in the ground, into which the R&R Systems heat exchangers are installed.
Horizontal Heat Exchanger System:
A horizontal ground heat exchanger system also consists of one or more ground collectors. To install these, the soil is excavated to a depth of approximately 1.5 metres. Then, the R&R Systems heat exchangers are placed in the excavation and covered with soil again.
These prefabricated concrete piles are equipped with R&R heat exchangers and serve as Energy Foundation Piles, as well as ground heat exchangers.
Our heat exchangers have a high efficiency
The R&R Systems Heat and Cold Storage Systems have integrated R&R heat exchangers. These heat exchangers have a large heat exchange surface, which makes them extremely efficient. As a result, less drilling is required.
Our systems are thermally balanced and thereby save more energy
If the heat demand is higher or lower than the cold demand, the system can be extended with the Energydak or the Energy Collector. These systems extract heat or cold from the roof, which can be used to retain the thermal balance of the source. This has two advantages. The return from the Heat and Cold Storage System increases, while the ground temperature is being maintained. This is better for the environment.
